"Detroit : City Wild"
- Florent Tillon
Ego production - France, 2010 - 80 min, VOST
Detroit : wild city " present in a particularly poetic and imagery way the reversibility of the process
of urbanization. Having known the abundance in the 1950s and 1960, Detroit was struck by
repeated economic crises which eventually led neglected and to the degradation of its city
center. Nevertheless, at the moment, the activists, the urban farmers and the artists are
re-appropriating the district. This documentary succeeds in feeding a reflection on the civilization,
on the art of the survival, on this nature which resumes its rights, and on what we can make of a city
in such a state.

After the projection, a meeting with the director will be proposed.

Lecture-slide show
Grange d'Appelboom / La Pommerie
Till Roeskens - Map : Sélestat

Afterthe lecture snacks will be served (your sweet or salty snacks are welcome).

As a somewhat utopical attempt of an exhaustive description of a small village in the countryside
and its inhabitants, this lecture-performance covers topics like globalization, town planning,
the workers’ or simply the human condition, and last but not least the tradition of the canoë-kayak
or the production of toothbrushes. To be located between one-man-show and an evening of
fairy tales, between a lecture in geography and a committed speech, this lecture is amusing as
well as rich in illustration. The artist is questioning the validity of our reference points and our
representations confronted with reality’s infinite complexity. Amateur in applied geography, Till Roeskens belongs to the explorative artists. His work originates in the experience of a given territory and those who try to mark a path there. Whatever he is taking along from his wanderings - be it a book, a video, a slide show or other artifacts, is not meant to be a simple proof or report, but an invitation to the exercise of contemplation, as a permanent questioning of what can be seized of the world’s infinite complexity. These «attempts of orientation» are elaborated with the intention of reaching out to a non-initiated public and to make those persons the artist met co-authors of his oeuvre.

This “improvisation on celluloid” – an avant-garde documentary film on the English guitarist, composer and improviser Fred Frith - shows us that a free cinema exists and that it can be improvised just like in free jazz. CURIOSITÉ#6

Projections / Get Together
THE MONTH OF DOCUMENTARY

First week of November

For 2 years now the month of documentary films has become a regular event of the end of the season at La Pommerie. It makes possible the presentation either of productions by former artists in residency or of the work of recently discovered artists – for example through received proposals for residencies. This cycle is carried out every year in cooperation with the local network of cinemas (situated in the villages of Aubusson, Eymoutiers, Neuvic, Tulle,…). A specificity: in addition to the regular program the currently invited artist can choose a film to be screened which is linked to his creation and his current preoccupations.
This year, it’s the artist Tessa Josse who will propose several documentary films in which sound takes a particularly important place, in addition to the screening of her own film Plastic and Glass.

Thursday, November 4th, 2010 - 9 pm
Cinéma de Jean Gabin - Eymoutiers, 30 avenue de la Paix
4€ et 5€

Plastic and Glass – Tessa Josse
France / 2009 / 9min - Le Fresnoy -VF
From the different processes of enormous machines to the manual activity of separating the different types of waste, the film shows the process of recycling. The permanent noise accompanying the work becomes a cadence and the sound of the fabric becomes a constant rhythm.

Heimatklaenge - Stefan Schwietert
Switzerland / 2008 / 1h22 - Maximage - VOST
Portrait of three folkloric singers. Winner of the Switzerland cinema price for the 'Best Documentary' in 2008. About the “youtse” and other forms of singing, a film about the most primitive instrument – the human voice. Cinema is the result of passages and HEIMATKLÄNGE is constructing bridges between the roots of musical traditions and their prolongations in the performances. The film director is transcending the picturesque aspect of the spectacular scenes. This is the condition of portraying three exceptional musicians and singers, who are strongly connected with the musical culture of the helvetic Alpes and at the same time looking for new horizons of artistic expression.Get together with the film director Tessa Josse after the screening.

Thursday, November 5th, 2010 - 8:30 pm
Cinéma Le Paradisio - Neuvic, Place de la Mairie

2006 / 1h29 - VOST

Muriel Rodolosse
Paintings and Drawings

Opening
17th of July à 19h
This encounter will be the occasion of a friendly exchange with the artists around a participative eroding: salty and sweet tarts are welcome!

For her residency at La Pommerie Muriel Rodolosse wanted to confront the physical dimension of her paintings to the immateriality of the sounds. This is with David Fenech, a musician at the border of rock, jazz and improvised musics, that they decided to envisage in a combinatorial approach this physical and mental experience of immersion.
Story, abstraction, representation, are so many dialogues and possible interactions between the hybrid and singular universe of these two artists.

In introduction to her residency, Appelboom/La Pommerie invites Muriel Rodolosse to present some of her previous paintings and drawings. This exhibition shows two monumental paintings on plexiglas, one large scale Indian ink drawing on paper and one in situ wall painting (3,6/2,5m) realized for the exhibition.

Initially planed to end the 31st of July, the exhibition will exceptionally be prolong until the 22nd of August to offer a larger and longer visibility to the public.

Tony Di Napoli
Sound installation
CHANT 1 : Source de la Vézère

Exhibition
26th of June to 11th of July 2010 at La Pommerie

From the beginning of May, Appelboom / La Pommerie hosts in residence the sculptor and musician Tony Di Napoli. The artist will ended his work and experimental session in the area with a sound performance with lithophone. This performance will also be the occasion of the opening of his sound installation Chant 1 : Source de la Vézère, wich will be visible at La Pommerie until the 11th of July.

Since 1994 Tony Di Napoli creates limestone instruments  named lithophones. Those surprising instuments look like large xylophones made of elongated blades or half-moon shapes cuted in stones. Knocked, they sound like bels ; rubed, they produce long and dense sound ranges of incredible pure and intense sounds.
Passionated by these singulars instruments, Tony Di Napoli learned the art to tune the stones in Viêt-Nam in 2002.
The work he initiates today at La Pommerie will be continued in different other rivers and sources in France. These researches have for inspiration a Chinese legend according to which the twelve notes of the Chinese range would have been defined from the sound of the yellow river.

During his residency, he has concentrated his work on the frequencies he registered at the source of the Vézère to concieve an autonomous sound installation. The amplified device broadcasts a creation based on the recordings of the source, which provok the vibration of two blades of lithophone and one square meter stone. Tune based on the source frequencies, these stones enter in vibration and ring in an almost inperceptible way the branches extremities. This installation evoks the rustle of the river and its progress.
